What should you use in a photo shoot Vinyl or Color Paper?

Many photographers and friends come up to me and ask what should they use to shoot? Vinyl or Color Paper? Choosing the right background for your photoshoot may seem like a headache but in reality it’s a lot easier than you think. It mostly depends on your environment and preference.

Color Paper!

Pro’s

  • Affordability: Color paper is much more affordable and cheaper then Vinyl backdrops. You can also buy it in most craft shops.

  • Wide Range of Colors: Color paper comes in every color possible and is a lot easier to find the proper color to match your shoot and theme.

  • Lightweight & Portability: Color paper is very light weight and easily transportable,

Con’s

  • Tears & Creases: Unlike Vinyl that is strong, color paper is very easily destructible. It creases and tears very easily, and if you plan to use liquid elements the paper will get wet.

  • Limited Time Usage: Color paper also is most likely only able to be used once due to not being strong and easily destructible.

Vinyl Background!

Pro’s

  • Durability: Vinyl backdrops are known for their durability, no tear, no crease, and most of all water-resistant. Photographers are more likely to use Vinyl backdrops depending on if they're using liquids in the shoot. They also can last you a few years if you take proper care of it.

  • Vibrant Colors: Vinyl backgrounds are known to have more vibrant colors, and also are very customizable. You can commission a certain color, pattern, or even style of background in vinyl.

Con’s

  • Cost: Vinyl backdrops are very EXPENSIVE! A good quality backdrop can cost from $35-60 dollars. This might not be ideal if you have a tight budget.

  • Portability: Vinyl backgrounds are suppose to be rolled up and standing while being stored. This may make it a bit bulky and hard to transport during location shoots.

Overall!

When deciding between vinyl and color paper for your photoshoot, consider the specific needs of your project such as budget and enviroment! Ultimately, both materials give you beautiful results :D
